Trey Gunn

What's an alumni? Is that what silver foil is made of? No, you buffoon - this is where you post about ex-members of the band.

Trey Gunn

Grace, power, finesse, a kicking heaviness that helps shred every eardrum nearby, a smoothness that makes the most complex melody lines flow like sweet syrup.. Trey Gunn has it all. Even as far back as 1994 he was giving a rock-solid kick to power the new King Crimson along, although it was quite a while before it became apparent just what a very important figure in the band's balance he was. In the ProjeKct phase it started to come out.. with more space to breathe for each of the subgroups, his personality started shining through as a stellar complement to Fripp. And through the Double Duo phase he never stopped providing just the anchor the others needed, whether it was simple steadiness or an endlessly interweaving part to entwine all the others.

The other part of what I admire about Trey so much is his relentless search for new things, from new instruments (piano to guitar to bass to Stick to Warr guitar) to different groups (Sylvian/Fripp, Sunday All Over the World, KC, Gordian Knot, Eric Johnson, the Trey Gunn Band) to new media (music to writing to helping run a record label to video/multimedia projects, and now the new Quodia). Besides Muir, he stands as the only other KC member who left voluntarily - not because of conflict or the breakup of the whole band, but because he felt he'd accomplished everything he set out to do.. and so there was nothing for it but to Move On. How many of us would do the same?

Check local info for details.

KTU stripQuodia is in the last stages of finishing up "Orpheus and Eurydice" -- a 2 CD set with text by poet Gregory Orr. The planned set includes one instrumental disc and one disc with a new re-telling of this story.

This lyric poem tells the classic story of Orpheus losing his lover to a snake bite and then traveling down to Hades to return her to Earth. Sadly he can't meet the one condition for bringing her back from the dead: don't turn around to look for her as you walk out of Hades. At this double-loss of Love, Orpheus begins to sing like no human has ever sung before.

Orr's poem captures the beauty of this story like no other. "What does Eurydice experience as the venom takes down her flesh?" "How does Orpheus convince his way into Hades?" "What does Eurydice feel when told she must return to her body?" "What can Orpheus' songs of grief inflict upon the natural world?" "Where does comfort end and Love begin?"

This work has been in process for a good long while, but is finally coming to completion.

Trey has begun teaching at a local Seattle high school and with private students. For info and insights about the instructing process see this link and keep tabs on upcoming diaries.

I've reached out to Trey several times requesting he make his three cassette-only releases available on CD. I have one (which I converted to CD), but am seeking the other two. Does anyone have his cassette releases? If so, please contact me. Thanks

Are these the albums he recorded with a/his band (which I forget the name of), possibly prior to meeting Fripp(???), and playing regular electric guitar?

I've long wondered what they sound like. Trey seems to neglect them completely in his bio these days.

Once I went a-hunting for info on that band and came across a film-maker's website showing stills of a video he had made for them (I don't think the site is online any more). So, you might want to try and track that video down too.
