What's an alumni? Is that what silver foil is made of? No, you buffoon - this is where you post about ex-members of the band.

It looks like KC might have a hold of TLev for now.

And that's the most positive KC touring "news" in a long time... sigh...

Question

Postby L.RayRojo on Wed Jun 07, 2006 3:23 pm

Does anyone happen to know if the song "Dog One" by the Tony Levin band is a version/mutation of the Peter Gabriel song "Soft Dog" off the "Shock the Monkey" 12 inch?

I don't know, but there's also a "Floating Dogs" on Birdy. Too bad my copy is 130 miles away at the moment.

To me, it sounds like a hybrid of "Soft Dog" and "I Go Swimming".

From the liner notes for Pieces of the Sun:

Larry, Jerry and I recorded this piece long ago with Peter Gabriel - One of those great tracks of his that never came out

Which I always assumed to mean it was a new recording of a completed, yet unreleased Peter Gabriel track in its own right.

I don't think that answers your question in any way though...

Has the original PG version surfaced on any studio out-take boots?

Not that I know of, but I'm far from an authority on the matter.

"Soft Dog" is actually an extremely cool track (if anyone wants an mp3 of it, PM me) but to me it's a strech to say "Dog One" is a direct descendent. If it is, I will change my nickname to "Soft_Dog_none".

While on the subject, does anyone know if Fripp plays on the officially released "Soft Dog" single (it was a b-side to "Shock the Monkey")? He isn't credited on the actual single I have, but everywhere else I've seen "Soft Dog" mentioned, it is mentioned as Gabriel/Fripp???? Anyone?

I think there are elements of Dog One in Floating Dogs, from the Birdy soundtrack. The main element I'm referring to is the sort of "bridge" between the "dog one...dog two" bits, where it gets into a slightly atmospheric jam. It's very similar at that point to Floating Dogs; even one of the stick lines is the same, I believe.
