Exposure

So will Fripp/DGM formally state the specifics of the upcoming release(s)? According to Amazon, there are four different versions of the album (a Japanese import with track 18 having a "Tba" title, something that looks like the old one, a limited edition, and something else). It's kinda frustrating.

I just got an email from Amazon.uk saying the new remaster will be out there on May 8th. For what that's worth.

That's far from being clear. According to ET, reading between the lines it seems to say there are three different versions:
CDx2: 2006.05.08 UK DGM DGM0601
CDx2: 2006.05.09 US DGM DGM0601 CDx2: 2006.05.24 JP WHD IECP-20001/2

Why? And is the tracklist as posted there, the tracklist for all three editions? Why in the hell does this release have to be so confusing, is it because they want to sell three versions to the "completists".

There are two versions of the remastered "Exposure" with the same set-list : one is a gatefold package like the first 30th Anniversary Editions of King Crimson Virgin back catalogue, the other is a standard double jewel case, that's all !
They are published the same day meanwhile gatefold packages of Crimson were published first, the standard jewel cases were published one year after...
Don't know if it's the same for the Japanese issues...

It's the same for the Japanese version too. Just two editions - jewel case & mini-vinyl - double CD. Blah, blah, blah... Oh fuck it - buy them all and incur the impotent fury of Sid Smith! :D

I think people need to remember that in several cases the differences between the 1979 and 1983/85 Exposure's include completely different takes, specifically vocal takes, hence the reason both are getting released here. The bonus five tracks on disc two are the unreleased Daryl Hall sessions.

Even though there is at least one extant track, a version of Mary with Daryl Hall’s vocal & Tim Cappella on sax*, not listed here (assuming this is the official song list) I think this is as close to a complete Exposure as we're ever going to get.

And yes, I can confirm that version of Mary exists... though I've never heard it myself, I do know someone who has it.

NB *: There are two unreleased versions of Mary with DH. One with sax, and one with Frippertronics and only one Mary is listed as a bonus track in this list. I'm assuming it's the Frippertronics version.

Think of it as a gore film directors cut DVD Indy and you'll be fine.

Addendum:

Can anyone confirm this is the complete official tracklist? Perhaps there's more?

The official DGM description reads:
The new 2 CD edition consists of the original 1979 release on CD1 [1st appearance of the original vinyl version on CD], while CD2 presents a version of the 1983 remix\1985 reissue with the inclusion of the 3 formerly unreleased Daryl Hall vocal tracks & an appendix of bonus tracks.

This is confusing as the Fripp-Rarities pages would have us believe (as Owen stated) that all five of the extra tracks are the Daryl Hall vocal tracks from the orignal sessions, not just three. I wonder how DGM is distinguishing between the "unreleased Daryl Hall vocal tracks" and the "appendix of bonus tracks." :?
My main interest is to finally get the vinyl versions on CD. Peter Hammill's vocal take on the 1979 version of "Disengage," for example, is far superior to the one that replaced it on the 1985 Definitive Edition*. I never understood what Fripp was thinking when he made that move.

*should read 1989 Definitive Edition.

When this Exposure reissue was first trumpeted I thought we might get the "original" version of the album, the one with Daryl Hall singing throughout. However, as time is passing, I am beginning to think that RF is releasing a remastered edition of the vinyl album on CD1 and the 1985 edition on CD2 with extra tracks featuring Hall tacked onto the end of CD2. The tracklisting here bears this out. Anyway, there's not long to wait really.
