FFWD (Robert Fripp & The Orb)

Postby The Crimson Fox on Sun Nov 06, 2005 9:57 pm

Have any of you folks heard FFWD by FFWD i.e. Fripp/Fehlmann/Weston/Dr A R Patterson (basically Fripp & The Orb)?

I bought this album when it was first released in 1994. It's probably one of the strangest records I own. I think it has been deleted now and I saw it on E-Bay for £17 the other day.

Basically it's Robert Fripp playing soundscapes (apparently he played for hours and Alex Patterson edited them and stamped his own personality on the sessions with assistance from the rest of The Orb guys).

Some of the tracks contain Robert's most emotional soundscapes I have heard on record. Apparently the sessions were recorded shortly after the death of his mother.

Can anyone tell me what the front cover is all about? To this day I haven’t a clue about this one? It's one of the strangest art works I have ever seen and it fits the music beautifully.

Apparently The Orb are releasing Orbsessions Vol.1 and this contains Robert on some tracks.

Anybody heard it yet?

Is it worth a purchase?

I have this one. I still don't exactly know what to make of it either.

This has had to grow on me probably more than most RF releases, but it's consistently interesting enough to be worth it. I'm baffled by the cover too, but the music is what matters.. it's even more 'ambient' than one would generally associate Dr. Patterson with, but to those of us familiar with Soundscapes it's its own small goldmine.
The sound of one hand clapping is the same as the sound of a tree falling when no one's around to hear it.

I've also got this one. I love the Orb, I love Fripp (well, his music at least), but for some reason never got along with the FFWD release. Not sure why. I think another listen is overdue!

From the "just because I am an anal gimboid" department:

I believe that the correct name of the project and title of the album is FFWD>> (including the >>).

Roll your eyes at me now.

Cheers,
O!

hi realise this is ages ago, but wanted to correct this information
there is no arrows after FFWD or anything like that, its just FFWD :)
alex paterson did not edit this or do anything on it at all. i did it.
my name is kris weston. i am the producer of this album
alex paterson and thomas fehlmann did very little on it.
thomas was a good guy to run things by though while i was producing it.
i was the one calling the shots tho.
fripp did two days of sessions and i cut them all up over a period of about a month i think it was.

the artwork is from a medieval drawing which was altered
the idea was to have all the characters in FFWD to be represented in it
so nick burton took the old drawing and tweaked it around to be a little more futuristic.
i like the end result.
there you go - now you know!

Thanks for clarifying things, Kris. (I know your name from the liner) ;)

I've had this album 20 years and it still baffles me. Love the artwork though...
