Paul Simon - Graceland starring Adrian Belew

Postby The Crimson Fox on Fri Oct 08, 2010 10:31 pm

Last night I listened to the classic album - Graceland by Paul Simon. Ive had this album since 1987 but have a problem. I am unable to detect Adrian Belews contributions on the album. In the inlay card he is down for providing guitar synthesizer on a few tracks.

Can anyone help with this puzzler?

The guitar solo on "Boy in the Bubble", if I recall correctly. And there's some splurges on "You can call me Al". He's also on "Crazy Love" too, but I don't remember where exactly. He's probably making the sound a giraffe and a lion making love inside a grand piano or something.

I have watched a classic albums show on "Graceland" and it has an interview with the bass player who plays the great stuff from "You can call me Al". He reveals that he played the first half of the crazy bass bit and then the engineer doubled the second half back in reverse. In the background of the song I can hear a tapping stick-like sound in some places. I was wondering whether this guy overdubbed the second bass or if Tony Levin (who has album credits) did it. I hope I havn't become so crimson-minded that I can hear an imaginary stick in it!!

Here's the guitar credits from Wikipedia, which look pretty accurate to me:

# Paul Simon - Acoustic Guitar (tracks 1 and 11), Guitar (tracks 5 and 7), Synclavier (track 3 and 4), Six-String Electric Bass (track 6), Background Vocals (tracks 1, 2, 4, 6, and 9)
# Ray Phiri - Guitar (tracks 2, 5, 6, 7, and 9)
# Adrian Belew - Guitar Synthesizer (tracks 1, 6, and 9), Guitar (track 7)
# Demola Adepoju - Pedal Steel Guitar (track 2)
# Daniel Xilakazi - Lead and Rhythm Guitar (track 4)
# Sherman Robertson - Guitar (track 10)
# Cesar Rosas - Guitar and backing vocals (track 11)
# David Hidalgo - Guitar, accordion, and backing vocals (track 11)

The guitar solo on "The Boy in the Bubble" is the most prominent thing, I think.

Shit! I stuffed up. Tony Levin didn't even play on that album. Looking at all the guitar parts Mark just presented I think the "stick-like" tapping sound is probably a wispy palm-muted guitar.

I never knew Adrian played on this classic album!

I love it, too. But anything Paul Simon has got to be great. I love the 80's vibe that this album has, and the world influences.

per adrian belew in a youtube interview, the horn section on "you can call me al" WAS adrian belew on a roland guitar synth.
