I think (?) we agree. This is what "Necessary but not sufficient" means. It cannot be KC without Fripp, but Fripp alone cannot make KC.

Yes, the first incarnation certainly left a legacy. How much some of the subsequent members valued their inheritance is another matter...

yes we agree :D

I think Billy took it very seriously, if he hadnt do you think he could have put up with Fripp for all those years?

Ok I'm glad to see that 9 votes have gone in favor of the music being the most importent feature of the band.

I would have picked "all of the above" if I had the choice.

Yes of course the music is the most important thing. If I didn't like the music, I wouldn't be bothered with any of this. But then again, I have to admit that if someone had presented "Lark's IV" under a different guise, I may not have ever given it enough of a chance.

But as others have said, Fripp has really been the one ushering this music into our world for the past 35 years. Like it or not, it's Fripp's show. The band will die with him.

That makes Fripp a "God" of sorts.

Plus, pissing people off can be fun.

So I vote for all of the above.

Dog_none has a good point, none of the poll choices exclude any of the others. I voted for #2, but that doesn't mean I don't agree with #3.

Food for thought: One band that was probably the closest thing to KC sans Fripp was U.K. In the initial line-up you had 2/3 of the 1974 trio, plus a violin player, so in a way making it more like 3/4 of the 1973-74 quartet. In lieu of Fripp was a jazz guitarist who was kind of buried in the mix. U.K. was a good band (great vocalist  ), but was it KC? Not hardly. Of course, it could be argued that they weren't trying to be KC and therefore shouldn't sound like them, but I think it gives one an idea of what a particular KC line-up minus Fripp might sound like.
Walking out's just another metaphor.
